Mother Blessing Ceremony
“Blessingway” is often the term used in connection with a gathering honoring the pregnant woman. We prefer to use the term Mother Blessing out of respect for the Navajo traditions. The term ‘Blessingway’ refers to a sacred blessing ceremony that is used to ensure good luck and prosperity. “Mother Blessing” is a more appropriate term for the ceremonies that were influenced by this tradition, but not practiced in accordance with the Navajo culture.
Unlike a traditional baby shower where the focus is on gifts for the baby, a Mother Blessing is a mother-centered shower to nurture the pregnant woman. The woman’s closest friends and family gather in love to build up her mind, body, and soul in preparation for her journey into motherhood. Our hope is that the pregnant woman leaves filled with love, strength, confidence, and belief in the ability of her body to birth her baby.

Mother Blessing ceremonies are not specific to any faith. A Mother Blessing can include activities that align with your religious preferences, or it can be a Mother Blessing to wish the pregnant woman well on her journey into motherhood, whether it be her first baby or her sixth.
A Mother Blessing ceremony can consist of:
- Guests bringing a bead that represents well wishes to make a bracelet or necklace for the pregnant woman to wear during her labor and birth
A wonderful bracelet made from the beads given at a Mother’s Blessing
- String or yarn ceremony
- Written blessing for her postpartum period
- Candles
- Birth affirmation banner to string up in her birth space
- Henna by the wonderful Raquel Alfaro
- Herbs or flowers for an Epsom salt bath
- Belly casting
- Guests bringing a natural element to add to her birth space
- Massage
- Guests bringing a rock with a single word written on it for inspiration during labor
- Food

Mother Blessing Quilts $500
Have each guest to bring a square fabric that has meaning behind it for the pregnant woman, or have them write their special wishes for the expectant mother on the quilt square. We will finish the quilt for the pregnant woman and return it before her birthing day (expedited services will be an extra charge). She will be able to have the quilt in her birthing space and cherish it for years to come.
